My thoughts
Read this the first time round when the second book was released and thought it was amazing. I am now re-reading this and the second book in preparation for the third which was just released. This time around I'm thinking maybe I overestimated the book. Yeah it was still good but I seemed more aware of the grammatical errors and how slow the beginning of the book was. Frey bugged me in this book as she hardly ever talks and even though she wonders why some events are happening she hardly ever voices her opinion (which is unusual for heroines). She seems perfectly fine with running away from her home and travelling with people who she doesn't even seem to like but who all seem to want to protect her and train her. Yet she never once asks why they would be doing this, she just lets Cheville dictate what she does all through the book. This book is written from Frey's perspective, which works well in some books, in this one not so much. For the first half of the book it just feels like the dull droning on of a little girl who hardly ever talks to the people around her yet utterly trust their motives. The characters where pretty one dimensional and all seemed pretty dense it was just soo annoying that we was on this supposedly magical journey for reasons unknown to a place we don't know. We also hardly find out anything about Frey herself as she doesn't know anything from her past and doesn't deem it important enough to ask anyone these questions. I was left with loads of questions and absolutely no answers whatsoever I will definitely have to read the next book just to see if there is any more to this series than I'm seeing (I'm sure I saw it the first time around).
